Netflix Review: In Bruges

Colin Farrell as a fuck up hitman.  Brendan Gleeson as his heart of gold mentor.  Ralph Fiennes as their truly badass boss.  Need I say more?  This movie was fantastic!

In Bruges follows Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as they are sent to Bruges because Colin Farrell messed up, bad.  He was sent on his first kill and had some serious collateral damage.  So Fiennes sends Gleeson and Farrell to Bruges to lay low for a while. This dark comedy follows their antics throughout the city.

This is most definitely a dark comedy.  You will laugh at someone getting shot in the face with a blank.  You will laugh at a coke party involving two hookers and a midget.  (He prefers to be called a dwarf!)  You will laugh at things that people probably shouldn’t laugh at.  But you will laugh.

I personally loved Jordan Prentice, who plays the midget, talking about the impending war between blacks and whites.  He and Colin Farrell even talk about black midgets and white midgets having an epic battle and what a marvelous movie that would make.  I would pay to see the midget battle royal personally.

Would you fuck with these guys?

But I can’t write this review without talking about Colin Farrell and the beauty with which he played his role.  There are countless times in this movie where he says absolutely nothing, but you understand perfectly what is going through his head.  In the beginning, Gleeson is trying to convince him that he has to stay away from their hometown and Farrell asks why.  Gleeson says something to the effect of “Well, you know…” and to watch the tortured look come over Farrell’s face, you know that he fucked up something big.

Another time, Farrell is trying to convince Gleeson to go out and have some beers, but just can’t talk him into it.  In 10 seconds you watch his face go from dejected to hopeful to ecstatic that he has come up with a plan that will work.  And it does.  Farrell is simply amazing in this movie.

This movie is dark, violent and funny all at the same time.  But both my wife and I talked about how much we loved it once it was over.  I can highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes movies.  Go get this one at your earliest convenience.
